How can I help?

“How can I help?” is a question that I wish a working professional had asked me when I graduated from university. Now more than ever university students are being faced with unprecedented changes and need guidance to navigate the ever-unpredictable workforce that they are about to enter.

COVID has interrupted our lives in so many ways and my heart goes out to those nervous and eager young adults about to step foot into the workforce. Finding a job is tough, but especially now during COVID recent university graduates are being confronted with more unknowns…how do you find a job when you are in quarantine? How do you meet new people? How do you network when you can’t grab a coffee with someone? There’s no easy way about it at the moment, everything we knew BEFORE has changed. There’s also so many personal questions that need answers when you start your career:

  • What do I want to do for a job? What roles interest me?

  • Where should I look to find a job? How do I start?

  • Which industries should I explore?

  • What experience do I have to leverage?

At my current company we receive Volunteer Time Off (VTO), which gives us seven full-days a year to volunteer our time however we choose. It’s aim is to give all employees the chance to give back to the community and help make the world a better place. We can break this time up in whatever format suits us best, and for my VTO days, my aspiration is to support young adults and help them shape the start of their career through mentoring and coaching, especially during this difficult time.

In the past I had a blog which I have now revamped to become a MENTORING & COACHING WEBSITE at www.samorrison.com. My website is for all female graduates interested in Tech who are looking for guidance, have any questions about where they should start, and want any tips as they’re first entering the workplace.

If you know of any female university graduates interested in Tech who need any advice or coaching as they start to enter the workforce, please send them my way! I would be more than happy to help. My ultimate goal is to bring more women into Tech and help young professionals who are going through a period of change and need direction. As such, I’m now committing my Sundays to help young female professionals reach their career aspirations, and am also open to helping anyone who needs any support or help especially in these challenging times.

Lastly, if there are any of you who are interested in helping to coach/mentor young professionals, please reach out directly through my LinkedIn or website. I’d love to connect and collaborate.
